The construction of Swanton Toll Plaza at milepost 49 in Lucas County – which was completed in 2021 and is currently undergoing extensive testing – is part of the Ohio Turnpike’s new toll collection system (TCS). It is one of four new or renovated toll plazas on the mainline that will enable E-ZPass customers to travel non-stop across the 241-mile toll road. When the new TCS goes live, sensors on the gantries above the two dedicated open road tolling lanes in each direction will read E-ZPass transponders and tolls will be charged electronically as customers travel without slowing down or stopping at these toll plazas. Customers without an E-ZPass traveling eastbound through Toll Plaza 49 will stop to take a ticket; and customers without an E-ZPass traveling westbound through Toll Plaza 49 will stop to pay a toll.
